Inuit Influences: Color Studies

At present I am embarking on a long term series called Inuit Influences.

Inuit (Eskimo) art has resonated with me since college days, as the childlike quality of Inuit artwork captures the essence of simplicity, joy and the enduring spirit in all things. Further, their belief in the spiritual and physical liminality between humans and animals connects with my own interest with animals. Animals have been recurring subjects through the many series I have produced: Jazz Fragments & Rhythm, Pond and Chez Moi. Some of the innumerable artists that have been my paragons have influenced my style ; Mattise primarily, Franz Marc for the love of abstracted animal forms, Bonnard for his color, Calder for his simplicity and joie de vivre.

My spontaneous style uses color as the driving force to create the composition and give it life. I am presently working on a sub series called Color Studies, which includes over (50) unique 16”x20” works on paper. I am inspired by original Inuit painting, sculpture (and their reproductions), which I reinterpret and recreate instinctively in order to preserve the power of the original. Sometimes I seek depth and color complexity by soaking paper or raw canvas, using raw pigment and crushed pastel to highlight an ethereal sensibility and maximize the color interaction. Adversely, sometimes I try to pare down the color and form by using flat brushwork, with minimal layers of flat dense paint.
The supernatural world placed on important part of their culture. Fellow creatures were also trying to survive the harsh conditions. The Inuit had a strong respect for the souls of their prey. They believed all things have a soul and that humans and animals were capable of taking on various forms. The concepts of kindred spirit with nature radiates from their work and is what drives mine.

The paintings will be on display at Flora, a restaurant in Arlington, MA from February through April.
